Is it time for the church to leave the marriage business? Is it time for clergy to get out of the wedding business? An article in the Sacramento Bee describes a growing sense in some California churches that the traditional “church marriage” ceremony should be reconsidered: The controversy over same-sex marriage – along with a growing sense that many couples who marry in churches never return – [...] more info
Digitizing the Dead Sea Scrolls At a previous job I worked on a few digitization projects. They are painstaking. There’s so many variables to balance, and standards to enforce, not to mention the repetitive work they usually entail. And what I was doing didn’t even touch the importance of this project. The New York Times reports: half a dozen specialists embarked [...] more info
Name of JC invoked at DNC Donald Miller, author of best-selling Christian book Blue Like Jazz, prayed at the Democratic National Convention last night—and it wasn’t some non-sectarian generic God he prayed to. It was “in the name of Your son, Jesus”! “Father God, This week, as the world looks on, help the leaders in this room create a civil dialogue about [...] more info
Collective Sermons Found this via the Emergent Village blog. Think it’ll work?Greetings denizens of the Internet. My name is Rob, and I’m performing an experiment. Can the collective intelligence of the ‘Net produce a preachable sermon? Maybe the digital age is incompatible with such an ancient format. Then again, maybe the lurker will join hands with the [...] more info
On the frontlines of the creation/evolution wars: one teacher’s story I’m not a schoolteacher, but I’ve always imagined that teaching high school biology must be a bit like walking through a minefield: say the wrong thing about evolution here and outraged parents mob you; say the wrong thing about creation there and… angry parents mob you. It’s probably not quite that dramatic in real life, [...] more info

Here’s Your Friday Feel Good Story I love it when people take the Bible seriously: The challenge began in April. The Rev. Religulous Bill Maher has a new documentary coming out called Religulous. Here’s the trailer: The only commentary I’ll offer is that I’d be surprised if Bill actually talked to anyone who might prove him wrong or challenge his assumptions.
